Tamil Nadu Christian Heritage: San Thome to Kanyakumari in 5 Days

5 DAYS 10 places by WaTrips

San Thome Basilica, Velankanni, Tranquebar's New Jerusalem Church, Trichy and Thanjavur, the Pearl Coast at Tuticorin and Manapad, and Kottar.

Five days along Tamil Nadu's Christian heritage, from Chennai down to the southern tip. Chennai's San Thome Basilica is built over the tomb of St Thomas, and the small Armenian Church is one of the city's oldest. Day two goes to the Danish town of Tranquebar (Tharangambadi), where the New Jerusalem Church was built in 1718, and then Velankanni, the great Marian shrine. Thanjavur's Schwartz Church and Trichy's Lourdes Church follow. Further south, the Pearl Coast has the Our Lady of Snows Basilica at Thoothukudi and the Holy Cross Church on the cliffs at Manapad. The trip ends at Kanyakumari and St Francis Xavier's Cathedral in Kottar. Velankanni is very crowded around its feast in early September.

Velankanni Basilica

The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health grew out of three apparitions reported in the 16th and 17th centuries - to a shepherd boy, to a lame buttermilk seller, and to Portuguese sailors saved from a storm, who built the first chapel here. The present white Gothic basilica was raised to minor basilica status by Pope John XXIII in 1962. Its eleven-day feast at the end of August draws pilgrims of every faith, which is why it is called the Lourdes of the East.
