Kodaikanal Hills: Palani, the Lake and Pillar Rocks in 3 Days

3 DAYS 8 places by WaTrips

The Palani hill temple, then Kodaikanal's star-shaped lake, Coaker's Walk, Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves and the forest lake at Berijam.

Kodaikanal, the 'princess of hill stations', is a short, cool break in the Palani Hills. Day one starts at the Palani Murugan Temple on its hilltop (a rope car or about 690 steps), then the ghat road climbs past Silver Cascade Falls. Day two is in town: walk or cycle around Kodaikanal Lake, take Coaker's Walk for the valley views, and see Bryant Park's flowers. On day three head out to Pillar Rocks, the Guna Caves and the forest lake at Berijam, which needs a forest department pass, so check timings before you go. Mist can roll in quickly in the afternoon, so do the viewpoints in the morning.

A star-shaped artificial lake of about 24 hectares, created in 1863 when Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the retired Collector of Madurai, dammed three streams in the hollow below the settlement. A five-kilometre path runs around it, and boats and hired bicycles are the usual way to see it.

Berijam Lake

A reservoir at about 2,000 metres some 21 km from Kodaikanal, built on the site of an older lake and supplying water to Periyakulam. It lies inside reserve forest, so entry needs a permit from the forest office, and the road in runs through shola and grassland.
