Tabuk and the Red Sea Coast in 3 Days: Wadi Disah, Al Wajh and Umluj

3 DAYS 4 places by WaTrips

Tabuk Castle and Wadi Disah, Al Wajh's old town, and the islands of Umluj.

Northwest Saudi Arabia combines desert canyons and Red Sea islands. Day one visits Tabuk Castle and drives into Wadi Disah, a canyon of palms and sandstone cliffs best explored by 4x4. Day two goes to the old coastal town of Al Wajh. Day three ends at Umluj, whose turquoise lagoons and islands earned it the name Maldives of Saudi Arabia. October to April is best; winter nights in Tabuk can be cold.

Tabuk Castle

Tabuk Castle stands in the centre of the city on a site connected with the Prophet Muhammad's expedition to Tabuk in 630 CE. The present fort dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt several times under the Ottomans, who used it to guard the pilgrimage route from Damascus to Madinah. It is a compact square building with corner towers, a courtyard, a mosque and a staircase to the roof, and inscriptions record its repairs. A museum inside displays finds from the region and the history of the Hajj road. The old Hejaz railway station nearby belongs to the same story and is also open to visitors.

Wadi Disah

Wadi Disah, also called Wadi Qaraqir, is a canyon in the Tabuk region where sandstone towers hundreds of metres high stand over a valley floor of springs, streams and date palms. Water runs here all year, which is rare in this desert, and the greenery against the red rock is what makes the place famous. Nabataean tomb facades and rock inscriptions are carved into the cliffs, showing that caravans used this route long ago. Visitors usually drive in by four-wheel drive from the south or walk the valley over several hours, and some camp overnight. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, and a local guide is recommended.

Al Wajh

Al Wajh is a port town on the Red Sea coast of Tabuk province with a well-preserved old quarter. Its houses of coral stone have carved wooden balconies in the Hejazi style, and there is an old fort, a souk and a lighthouse. The town was a stop for Egyptian pilgrims travelling by sea. Clear lagoons and islands lie offshore.

Umluj Beaches

Umluj, on the Red Sea coast of Tabuk region, is known for white sand, clear shallow water and a scatter of more than a hundred small islands offshore, which is why it is often called the Maldives of Saudi Arabia. The reefs close to shore are alive with coral and fish, and dolphins are regularly seen from boats. Trips run out to islands such as Jabal Hassan for snorkelling and swimming, and the beaches north of town are quiet and undeveloped. The area lies within the wider Red Sea tourism zone now being developed. Water is calmest and clearest between October and April.
