Rewa and Maihar in 2 Days: Sharda Devi and the Waterfalls

2 DAYS 4 places by WaTrips

Sharda Devi temple on Trikuta hill at Maihar, then Purwa, Chachai and Keoti falls around Rewa.

A short trip in northeastern Madhya Pradesh. Day one climbs to the Sharda Devi temple on Trikuta hill at Maihar, by steps or ropeway, then drives to Purwa Falls on the Tons river. Day two visits Chachai and Keoti, two of the highest waterfalls in the state, where rivers drop off the Rewa plateau into deep gorges. The falls are at their best from August to October, after the monsoon; by summer some run almost dry.

Maihar Sharda Devi Temple

The Sharda Devi Temple at Maihar stands on top of Trikuta hill and is one of the most visited goddess shrines in central India. Pilgrims climb 1,063 steps to reach it, or take the ropeway. Local tradition links the temple with the warrior brothers Alha and Udal. Maihar is also famous in music as the home of Ustad Allauddin Khan. Navratri brings very large crowds.

Purwa Falls

Purwa Falls is a broad waterfall on the Tons River in Rewa district, where the river drops about 70 metres off the plateau into a wide gorge. Unlike some neighbouring falls it carries a good volume of water for much of the year. It is impressive in the monsoon, when brown water fills the whole lip. Viewpoints are on the rim; take care near unfenced edges.

Chachai Falls

Chachai Falls, on the Bihad River in Rewa district, plunges about 130 metres from the edge of the Rewa plateau into a deep gorge, making it one of the highest waterfalls in Madhya Pradesh. Upstream water use means it flows strongly only in the monsoon and for a short while afterwards. The rim gives sweeping views; there are few railings, so keep well back from the edge.

Keoti Falls

Keoti Falls, in Rewa district, drops about 98 metres in a single leap where the Mahana River leaves the Rewa plateau. It is among the tallest waterfalls in India. Viewpoints on the rim look into the horseshoe gorge and across to the ruins of an old fort. The fall is at its most impressive during and just after the monsoon and shrinks greatly in summer.
