Pachmarhi in 2 Days: Caves, Waterfalls and Dhoopgarh

2 DAYS 6 places by WaTrips

Pandav Caves, Bee Falls and Christ Church, then Jata Shankar, Handi Khoh and sunset at Dhoopgarh.

Pachmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's only hill station, set in the Satpura range. Day one covers the Pandav Caves, a swim at Bee Falls and the old Christ Church from the British era. Day two goes to the cave temple of Jata Shankar, the deep gorge of Handi Khoh, and ends with sunset from Dhoopgarh, the highest point in central India. Many sites sit inside the Satpura Tiger Reserve and are reached by gypsy; some close in the monsoon. October to June is best.

Pandav Caves Pachmarhi

The Pandav Caves are five rock-cut chambers on a low sandstone hill in Pachmarhi, which is said to take its name from them: 'panch marhi' means five caves. Legend links them to the Pandava brothers' exile, though archaeologists believe they were cut for Buddhist monks many centuries ago. A landscaped garden lies at the foot of the hill, and the top gives a good view over the town.

Bee Falls

Bee Falls is the best-known waterfall in the hill station of Pachmarhi, dropping about 35 metres into a rocky pool in a forested ravine. A long flight of steps leads down to the base, where visitors can stand under the spray, and the stream also supplies the town's drinking water. The flow is strongest just after the monsoon; the climb back up is steep.

Christ Church Pachmarhi

Christ Church in Pachmarhi was built by the British in 1875, when the hill station was a summer retreat and military sanatorium. The small Protestant church has a red sandstone body, a tall spire and fine stained-glass windows brought from Europe, and its hemispherical dome over the altar is unusual. It still holds services, and its quiet grounds are a short walk from the town centre.

Jata Shankar Cave

Jata Shankar is a natural cave shrine in a deep ravine at Pachmarhi, sacred to Shiva. Rock formations hanging from the roof are said to resemble the matted hair of the god, and a natural linga is worshipped inside, where spring water collects in a pool. A paved path and steps lead down between towering boulders. It is especially crowded during Mahashivratri.

Handi Khoh

Handi Khoh is a narrow, forested gorge in Pachmarhi with cliffs that drop about 100 metres almost straight down. Railed viewpoints at the edge look into the ravine and across to the distant hills. Local legend says Shiva trapped a demon serpent here. It lies on the usual sightseeing circuit with Priyadarshini Point and is best seen in clear weather after the rains.

Dhoopgarh

Dhoopgarh, at about 1,350 metres, is the highest point in the Satpura range and in Madhya Pradesh. It rises on the edge of Pachmarhi and is famous for its sunrise and sunset views over layers of forested ridges. A road climbs most of the way and a short walk leads to the viewing areas. Evenings are cool and often windy, so carry a jacket.
