The Eastern Black Sea: Trabzon, Sumela, Uzungöl and Ayder

4 DAYS 4 places by WaTrips

Trabzon's Hagia Sophia, Sumela Monastery on its cliff, Uzungöl lake and the meadows of Ayder.

The eastern Black Sea is green, misty and mountainous, with tea gardens on the slopes. Start in Trabzon at its 13th-century Hagia Sophia and its frescoes, then visit Sumela Monastery, built into a sheer cliff above a forest valley. Spend a day at Uzungöl, a lake village in the hills, and finish in the high summer pastures of Ayder Plateau, with wooden houses, hot springs and waterfalls. June to September is the time; it rains often, so pack a jacket.
