Musandam in 2 Days: Fjords, Dolphins and Mountain Roads

2 DAYS 6 places by WaTrips

Khasab Fort and a dhow cruise through Khor Sham to Telegraph Island, then Jebel Harim, Khor Najd and Bukha Fort.

Musandam is Oman's dramatic northern tip, cut off from the rest of the country. Day one visits Khasab Fort and takes a dhow cruise through the fjord of Khor Sham, with dolphins and a stop at Telegraph Island. Day two drives the mountain road up Jebel Harim to the Khor Najd viewpoint and visits Bukha Fort. Reach Khasab by road from Ras Al Khaimah or by flight or ferry from Muscat. October to April is best.

Khasab Fort

Khasab Fort stands by the old harbour of Khasab, the main town of Oman's Musandam peninsula. The Portuguese built it in the 17th century to control the Strait of Hormuz, around an older round tower. Omanis later made it the seat of the local governor. It is now a museum, with traditional boats in the courtyard and rooms showing the life of Musandam's people.

Khor Sham Fjord

Khor Sham is the longest of the fjord-like inlets of Musandam, running about 17 kilometres between bare limestone mountains. The calm blue water is reached by dhow from Khasab. Small fishing villages on its shores can only be reached by boat. Dolphins often swim beside the dhows, and trips stop for swimming and snorkelling in the clear water.

Telegraph Island

Telegraph Island is a tiny rocky island in Khor Sham, Musandam. In 1864 the British built a telegraph repeater station here on the cable linking India with Britain. The station was used only for a few years, as the heat and isolation made life very hard for the staff. Ruined walls and steps remain. Dhow cruises from Khasab stop here for swimming.

Jebel Harim

Jebel Harim, the Mountain of Women, is the highest peak in Musandam at about 2,087 metres. A graded road climbs from Khasab past terraced fields and stone houses to a high plateau. Fossils of shells and sea creatures can be seen in the rocks near the top. The views take in deep canyons and, on clear days, the sea on both sides of the peninsula.

Khor Najd

Khor Najd is a sheltered inlet on the east side of Musandam, and the only one of its fjords that can be reached by car. A steep track of hairpin bends crosses a ridge and drops to the shore. The viewpoint at the top gives the classic picture of Musandam: a blue bay closed in by layers of bare mountains. A small beach lies at the bottom.

Bukha Fort

Bukha Fort stands beside the coast road in the town of Bukha, between Khasab and the UAE border. It was built in the 17th century in the time of Imam Saif bin Sultan Al Yarubi. The sea once came up to its walls and filled a moat. The fort has a square plan with corner towers, one of them shaped like a pear to deflect cannon balls.
