Kamakura, Enoshima and Yokohama: An Easy Escape from Tokyo

2 DAYS 7 places by WaTrips

The Great Buddha, Hase-dera and Tsurugaoka Hachimangū, Enoshima at sunset, Sankei-en, Yokohama Chinatown and Minato Mirai.

Kamakura, an hour from Tokyo, was Japan's capital in the 13th century. See the Great Buddha sitting in the open air, Hase-dera on its hillside above the sea and the grand Tsurugaoka Hachimangū shrine. Take the little Enoden train to Enoshima island for its shrines and sunset view of Fuji. The next day visit Yokohama: the classic garden of Sankei-en, Japan's largest Chinatown and the waterfront of Minato Mirai lit up at night. Hydrangeas in June and autumn colours are lovely in Kamakura.

Hase-dera is a Buddhist temple in Kamakura known for its eleven-headed statue of Kannon, about 9 metres tall, carved from wood and gilded. The temple stands on a hillside with views over Sagami Bay. Its gardens have ponds and many hydrangeas that bloom in June. A cave holds small carved figures, and thousands of small Jizō statues stand in the grounds.

Enoshima is a small island off the coast of Fujisawa, linked to the mainland by a bridge. It has shrines dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, the Samuel Cocking Garden with a lighthouse observation tower, and sea caves on its southern coast. A shopping street with seafood restaurants climbs from the bridge. On clear days Mount Fuji can be seen across the bay.

Yokohama Chinatown is the largest Chinatown in Japan, founded in the 1860s after the port of Yokohama opened to foreign trade. Its colourful gates lead into streets with hundreds of restaurants and shops. The Kanteibyō temple, dedicated to the Chinese god Guan Yu, is richly decorated. Street stalls sell steamed buns and other snacks.
