Japan's Great Castles: Nagoya, Hikone and Himeji

3 DAYS 4 places by WaTrips

Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine, Hikone Castle on Lake Biwa and Himeji Castle.

Japan once had thousands of castles; only twelve original keeps survive, and this short trip sees two of the best. Start in Nagoya at its rebuilt castle with golden dolphins on the roof, and Atsuta Shrine, home of a sacred sword. Visit Hikone Castle, an original 17th-century keep above Lake Biwa, and end at Himeji Castle, the gleaming white 'White Heron', the finest castle in Japan and a UNESCO site. Cherry blossom season in early April is spectacular at both Hikone and Himeji.

Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle was built from 1610 for the Owari branch of the Tokugawa family. It was one of the grandest castles in Japan. The main keep, topped with a pair of golden shachihoko, mythical fish, was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in concrete in 1959. The Hommaru Palace has been reconstructed with painted screens and fine woodwork.

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the largest and most famous surviving original castle in Japan. Its present form was completed in 1609. It is called the White Heron Castle because of its brilliant white walls and roofs that look like a bird taking flight. Its complex system of gates and maze-like paths was designed for defence. It was one of Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
