Hokkaido in 6 Days: Sapporo, Otaru, Lavender Fields, Shiretoko and Hakodate

6 DAYS 10 places by WaTrips

Sapporo's park and clock tower, the Otaru Canal, Farm Tomita and the Blue Pond, Shiretoko Five Lakes, Noboribetsu, Lake Tōya and Hakodate.

Hokkaido is Japan's wild north: big skies, farmland, volcanoes and fresh seafood. Start in Sapporo at Odori Park and the old Clock Tower, then stroll Otaru's canal. Head inland to the lavender fields of Farm Tomita and the Blue Pond at Biei, then cross to the remote Shiretoko peninsula for its five lakes and bears. Soak in the hot springs of Noboribetsu's Hell Valley, see Lake Tōya and end in Hakodate with its star-shaped fort and night view. Lavender blooms in July; winter brings snow festivals.

The Otaru Canal was completed in 1923 in the port city of Otaru, Hokkaido. Stone warehouses built along it in the early 20th century have been turned into restaurants, glass shops and museums. Gas lamps line the walking path, lit in the evening. In February the Otaru Snow Light Path festival fills the canal with candles.

Noboribetsu Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, is a volcanic valley above the onsen town of Noboribetsu in Hokkaido. Steam and gas rise from vents and boiling pools among bare yellow and red rocks. A boardwalk leads through the valley. Its water feeds the many hot spring hotels of the town, which is one of the best known onsen resorts in Japan.
