Mount Fuji and Hakone in 3 Days: Lakes, Pagodas, Volcanic Valleys and Hot Springs

3 DAYS 7 places by WaTrips

The Chūreitō Pagoda view, Lake Kawaguchi, Oshino Hakkai, Mount Fuji itself, Ōwakudani, Lake Ashi and Hakone Shrine.

Mount Fuji is shy, often hidden by cloud, so give it a few days. Start with the classic view of Fuji behind the Chūreitō Pagoda, then explore Lake Kawaguchi and the clear spring ponds of Oshino Hakkai. Climb Fuji in July or August, or drive to the fifth station for the view. Finish in Hakone: ride the ropeway over the steaming Ōwakudani valley and eat black eggs cooked in the hot springs, cruise Lake Ashi and see Hakone Shrine's red gate in the water, then stay in a ryokan with an onsen. Clearest views are in winter.

Chūreitō Pagoda

The Chūreitō Pagoda is a five-storey pagoda on a hillside above Fujiyoshida, part of the Arakurayama Sengen Shrine. It was built in 1963 as a peace memorial. A climb of about 400 steps leads to a viewpoint where the red pagoda, the town and Mount Fuji appear together. In spring cherry blossoms frame the view, making it one of the most famous images of Japan.

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776 metres and an active volcano that last erupted in 1707. Its nearly symmetrical cone has been a sacred place and a subject of art for centuries. The official climbing season runs in July and August, when many people climb overnight to see the sunrise from the summit. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
