Amanohashidate and Kinosaki Onsen: Two Days on the Sea of Japan

2 DAYS 2 places by WaTrips

Amanohashidate's pine sandbar and Kinosaki Onsen's seven public baths.

On the Sea of Japan coast north of Kyoto are two classic escapes. Amanohashidate is a narrow sandbar covered in pine trees, one of Japan's three most scenic views; tradition says to view it upside down between your legs from the hill. Then go to Kinosaki Onsen, a willow-lined canal town where guests stroll between seven public hot spring baths in yukata and wooden sandals. Winter brings snow and crab season, and is the cosiest time to visit.

Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate is a sandbar about 3.6 kilometres long across Miyazu Bay on the Sea of Japan, covered with thousands of pine trees. It is counted as one of the three most scenic views in Japan. Visitors traditionally view it upside down from between their legs at viewpoints on the hills, so that it looks like a bridge to heaven, the meaning of its name.
