Chamba, Khajjiar and Bharmour in 3 Days

3 DAYS 5 places by WaTrips

Kalatop's forest and Khajjiar's meadow, the Lakshmi Narayan temples and Chamera lake, then Bharmour's Chaurasi temples.

Chamba is one of Himachal's oldest and least hurried corners. Day one walks the forests of Kalatop and the meadow and lake at Khajjiar, often called the Mini Switzerland of India. Day two visits Chamba town's Lakshmi Narayan temples, built in the old stone-and-wood style, and the Chamera dam lake. Day three rides up the Budhil valley to Bharmour and the Chaurasi temple complex of 84 shrines in one courtyard; the Manimahesh Yatra starts from here in August. April to June and September to November are best.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary covers the thick deodar and fir forest between Dalhousie and Khajjiar. A level forest road of about three kilometres from the Lakkar Mandi gate leads to an old forest rest house in a clearing, a favourite easy walk. Black bears, martens, deer and many pheasants live here, though they are rarely seen. The trail also continues to Khajjiar.

Khajjiar

Khajjiar is a saucer-shaped meadow at about 1,900 metres between Dalhousie and Chamba, ringed by dense deodar forest with a small lake at its centre. A 12th-century wooden temple to Khajji Nag stands at the edge. Visitors walk, ride ponies or try zorbing on the grass, and the snow peaks are visible on clear days. It is often called the 'mini Switzerland' of India.

Lakshmi Narayan Temple Chamba

The Lakshmi Narayan temple complex is the largest and oldest in Chamba town, begun in the 10th century by Raja Sahil Varman, the town's founder. Six stone temples in the northern shikhara style stand in a row, three dedicated to Vishnu and three to Shiva, with wooden umbrella roofs added to shed snow. The main image is of white marble. It is busiest at morning and evening worship.

Chamera Dam

Chamera Dam, on the Ravi River near Dalhousie, was completed in 1994 for hydroelectric power. Its long, winding reservoir fills a deep green valley and stays at a fairly constant level, which makes it suitable for boating; motor boats, rowing boats and kayaks can be hired at the lakeside. The drive down from Dalhousie gives fine views over the water.

Chaurasi Temple Bharmour

The Chaurasi temple complex at Bharmour, the ancient capital of Chamba, takes its name from the 84 shrines said to stand in its courtyard. Most date from the 7th to 10th centuries. The tall stone Manimahesh temple and the wooden Lakshana Devi temple, with its superb carved doorway, are the finest. Pilgrims to Manimahesh Lake begin their journey here.
