Jhansi Fort and Rani Mahal, the Dashavatara temple at Deogarh, Kalinjar Fort and Ramghat at Chitrakoot.

Bundelkhand is rugged, little-visited country full of forts. Day one is Jhansi, Rani Lakshmibai's fort and her palace, the Rani Mahal. Day two goes to Deogarh on the Betwa for the Dashavatara temple, one of the oldest surviving Hindu temples in north India. Day three climbs Kalinjar, a huge fort on a flat-topped hill with the Neelkanth temple inside. Day four ends in Chitrakoot, where Ram is said to have spent his exile, with evening aarti at Ramghat on the Mandakini. October to March is best; summers are very hot.

Jhansi Fort

Jhansi Fort was built in 1613 by Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha on a rocky hill. It is famous as the stronghold of Rani Lakshmibai, who led her forces against the British in 1858; the spot from which she is said to have leapt on horseback is marked. Visitors can see the Kadak Bijli cannon, temples and a view over the city.

Rani Mahal Jhansi

Rani Mahal was the palace of Rani Lakshmibai in the town of Jhansi, built in the 18th century by the Newalkar family. The two-storey building has arcaded rooms around a courtyard, and its durbar hall retains brightly painted walls and ceilings. It is now a museum with sculptures from the 9th to 12th centuries collected from the surrounding region.

Dashavatara Temple Deogarh

The Dashavatara temple at Deogarh, built around 500 CE in the Gupta period, is one of the earliest surviving stone temples in northern India. Though the tower is ruined, its carved doorway and three great relief panels, showing Vishnu sleeping on the serpent Shesha, Nara-Narayana and the rescue of the elephant Gajendra, are masterpieces of Indian sculpture. Jain temples stand on the fort hill nearby.

Kalinjar Fort

Kalinjar is a great hill fort on an isolated plateau in Bundelkhand, held by many dynasties, most notably the Chandelas. Mahmud of Ghazni failed to take it, and Sher Shah Suri died from wounds received in besieging it in 1545. Within the walls are the Neelkanth temple cut into the cliff, rock carvings, tanks and ruined palaces. The views across the Vindhyan hills are wide.

Ramghat Chitrakoot

Ramghat is the main bathing ghat on the Mandakini River at Chitrakoot, the forest retreat where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are believed to have spent much of their exile. Pilgrims bathe here at dawn, and rows of painted boats wait to ferry visitors along the temple-lined banks. The evening aarti, when lamps are floated on the water, is the best time to come.
