Vizianagaram and Srikakulam in 2 Days: Forts and Old Temples of North Andhra

2 DAYS 3 places by WaTrips

Vizianagaram Fort, the Arasavalli Sun Temple and the old Eastern Ganga temple at Srimukhalingam, an easy weekend from Vizag.

A short weekend north of Visakhapatnam through a quieter part of Andhra. An hour from Vizag, Vizianagaram Fort was the seat of the local rulers and still anchors the old town. Continue to Srikakulam for the Arasavalli Sun Temple, one of the few in India dedicated to Surya, where on certain days of the year the morning sun falls on the idol. Day two visits Srimukhalingam, a group of temples built by the Eastern Ganga dynasty more than a thousand years ago, with detailed stone carving and a calm village setting. Distances are short, so there is time to stop at the beaches along the coast road on the way back. Winter is the most comfortable season.

Srimukhalingam Temple

Built by the Eastern Gangas around the 9th century, the Mukhalingeswara temple at Srimukhalingam is a fine example of Kalinga-style architecture, with richly carved walls. The linga bears a face of Shiva, which gives the village its name. Nearby stand the Bhimeswara and Someswara temples.
