Nashik and Shani Shingnapur in 2 Days: Trimbakeshwar to Grishneshwar

A short pilgrim route through north Maharashtra. Day one starts at Ramkund in Panchavati, Nashik's sacred bathing place on the Godavari, continues to the Buddhist Pandavleni caves, and ends at Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga near the source of the river. Day two drives to Shani Shingnapur, the village famous for houses without doors, and on to Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga near Ellora. The roads are busy at festival times; October to March is best.

Ramkund Panchavati

On the Godavari in the Panchavati area of Nashik, Ramkund is the sacred tank where Rama is believed to have bathed during his exile. Pilgrims come to bathe and to immerse the ashes of the dead, and it is the centre of the Kumbh Mela held in Nashik every twelve years.

Pandavleni Caves

Cut into a hill on the edge of Nashik, the Pandavleni or Trirashmi Caves are a group of 24 Buddhist caves from the 1st century BCE to the 3rd century CE. Their inscriptions record gifts by the Satavahana and Kshatrapa rulers, and the climb gives views over the city.

Trimbakeshwar Temple

Near the source of the Godavari, Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The present black stone temple was built by the Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the 18th century, and its linga has three faces representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
