Haflong Lake and Jatinga, then the blue lake of Umrangso.
Dima Hasao is Assam's hill district. Day one visits Haflong Lake in the state's only hill station and Jatinga, known for the strange way birds fly towards lights on misty autumn nights. Day two goes to Umrangso and its blue-green lake. September to November is a good time to visit.
Haflong Lake lies in the middle of Haflong, the only hill station of Assam and headquarters of Dima Hasao district. A hanging footbridge crosses the water, and boating is offered by the town authorities. Low green hills surround the lake, and the nearby market sells local fruit and crafts of the Dimasa, Zeme Naga and Hmar communities.
Jatinga is a Khasi-Pnar village on a ridge about nine kilometres from Haflong. It is known for a strange event on dark, foggy nights between September and November, when birds fly toward lights in the village and fall disoriented. A watchtower stands near the village, and the ridge road gives broad views of the Barail hills.
Umrangso is a small hill town in Dima Hasao district near the border with Meghalaya. It grew around the Kopili hydroelectric project, whose reservoir spreads beneath pine-covered slopes. There is a hilltop golf course, a hot spring at Garampani nearby, and from October many Amur falcons roost in the area on their long migration.
