The Rang Ghar, Talatal Ghar, Sivadol and Joysagar, Kareng Ghar and the maidams of Charaideo.

For six centuries the Ahom kings ruled Assam, and Sivasagar was their capital. Day one visits the Rang Ghar pavilion, from which royals watched games, the multi-storey Talatal Ghar, the tall Sivadol temple and the huge Joysagar tank. Day two goes to the Kareng Ghar palace at Garhgaon and the royal burial mounds of Charaideo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. October to April is best; the Rongali Bihu festival in April is lively.

Rang Ghar

Rang Ghar in Sivasagar is a two-storey royal pavilion from which the Ahom kings watched buffalo fights and other sports at the Rupahi field, especially during Rongali Bihu. Built in brick in 1746 under Swargadeo Pramatta Singha, it has a roof shaped like an upturned royal long boat and is often called one of Asia's oldest surviving amphitheatres.

Talatal Ghar

Talatal Ghar at Rangpur, on the edge of Sivasagar, is the largest Ahom monument. Begun by Swargadeo Rudra Singha and enlarged in brick by Rajeswar Singha in the mid-18th century, it combined a palace with a military base. It is said to have had three underground floors and secret tunnels; visitors today explore the upper storeys and terraces.

Sivasagar Sivadol

The Sivadol stands on the bank of the Sivasagar tank in the centre of Sivasagar town. It was built in 1734 by Queen Ambika, wife of Ahom king Siva Singha, and its tower rises about 32 metres, topped by a gilded dome. Flanked by the smaller Vishnudol and Devidol, it is the main Shiva temple of upper Assam and is busiest on Maha Shivaratri.

Joysagar Tank

Joysagar Tank, on the outskirts of Sivasagar, is a vast man-made lake dug in 1697 by Ahom king Rudra Singha in memory of his mother Joymoti. It is said to have been completed in only 45 days. Three temples stand on its bank, the Joy Dol, Shiva Dol and Devi Dol, and the calm water is a good place for winter birdwatching.

Kareng Ghar Garhgaon

Kareng Ghar at Garhgaon, about 15 km from Sivasagar, was the royal palace of the Ahom kings at their old capital. The present multi-storeyed brick structure was built around 1752 by Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha, replacing earlier wooden palaces. Each floor steps back from the one below, and the top gives a view over the surrounding fields.

Charaideo Maidam

Charaideo, about 30 km from Sivasagar, was the first capital of the Ahom kingdom, founded by Sukaphaa in 1253. It later became the royal burial ground: its grassy hemispherical mounds, called moidams, cover the vaulted tombs of Ahom kings and queens. The Moidams were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024.
