Albay in 2 Days: Mayon Volcano, the Cagsawa Ruins and Daraga Church

2 DAYS 2 places by WaTrips

The Cagsawa Ruins below Mayon Volcano and the hilltop Daraga Church.

Mayon is said to be the world's most perfect volcanic cone, and Albay is the place to see it. Visit the Cagsawa Ruins, the bell tower of a church buried by the 1814 eruption, with Mayon rising behind it, and take an ATV ride towards the lava trails. Then climb to Daraga Church, a baroque church on a hill with one of the best views of the volcano. Go early in the morning, when Mayon is most often free of cloud.

Cagsawa Ruins

The Cagsawa Ruins are the remains of an 18th-century Franciscan church destroyed when Mayon Volcano erupted in 1814. Only the bell tower and fragments of walls survive, with the perfect cone of Mayon rising behind them. It is one of the most iconic views in the Philippines. Come early in the morning, when the summit of the volcano is most likely to be free of clouds.

Daraga Church

Daraga Church, the Church of Our Lady of the Gate, sits on a hill overlooking Mayon Volcano. It was built by Franciscans in the 1770s from volcanic stone and has an ornate Baroque facade with carved saints and designs. The church was damaged in a 2019 earthquake and has undergone restoration. Its hilltop gives a fine view of Mayon on clear days.
