The Canary Islands in 4 Days: Teide, Roque Nublo and Timanfaya

4 DAYS 3 places by WaTrips

Teide National Park on Tenerife, sunset above the clouds, Roque Nublo on Gran Canaria and Timanfaya's volcanoes on Lanzarote.

The Canaries are volcanic islands off Africa with spring-like weather all year. Spend two days on Tenerife in Teide National Park, riding the cable car up Spain's highest mountain and staying for sunset above the clouds and starry skies. Hike to Roque Nublo, a rock pillar in the heart of Gran Canaria, and end in Lanzarote's Timanfaya, where the ground is still hot enough to cook on. Any time of year works.

Teide National Park

Teide National Park on Tenerife surrounds Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain at about 3,715 metres. It is a volcano rising from a huge caldera of lava fields and strange rock formations such as the Roques de García. A cable car climbs near the summit. The clear skies make it a famous spot for stargazing. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Roque Nublo

Roque Nublo is a basalt rock about 80 metres tall standing on a summit in the centre of Gran Canaria, at about 1,813 metres. It was formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. It is a symbol of the island and was once sacred to the native Canarians. A short hike leads up to it, with views over the island and to Mount Teide on Tenerife.

Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park on Lanzarote covers a landscape of volcanoes and lava fields formed by eruptions in the 1730s and 1820s. The ground is still hot just below the surface; guides show how dry branches catch fire and water turns to steam. A restaurant grills food over volcanic heat. Visitors tour the park by bus along the Route of the Volcanoes.
