Sinai in 3 Days: Saint Catherine's, Sunrise on Mount Sinai and the Blue Hole

3 DAYS 3 places by WaTrips

Saint Catherine's Monastery, the night climb of Mount Sinai for sunrise, and snorkelling at Dahab's Blue Hole.

The Sinai is a land of red mountains and coral seas. Visit Saint Catherine's Monastery, one of the oldest working monasteries in the world, built around the Burning Bush. Climb Mount Sinai in the night, by camel path and the Steps of Repentance, to watch the sunrise from the summit where Moses received the Law. Then rest in Dahab and snorkel the Blue Hole, where the reef drops straight into the deep. Bring warm clothes for the summit; March–May and September–November are best.

Saint Catherine's Monastery

Saint Catherine's Monastery lies at the foot of Mount Sinai and is one of the oldest working Christian monasteries in the world, founded in the 6th century. Its fortified walls protect a basilica, a famous library of ancient manuscripts and a plant said to descend from the Burning Bush. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opening hours are limited, so check before visiting.

Mount Sinai

Mount Sinai, known locally as Jebel Musa, is where tradition says Moses received the Ten Commandments. Most visitors hike up at night along a camel path or the Steps of Repentance to watch the sunrise from the summit, where a small chapel and mosque stand. The climb takes two to three hours. Bring warm clothes, as it is cold at the top before dawn.

Blue Hole Dahab

The Blue Hole near Dahab is a deep underwater sinkhole in the Red Sea, ringed by coral reef close to the shore. It is famous among freedivers and snorkellers for its clear water and colourful marine life. The hole is dangerous for divers going too deep, and memorial plaques line the shore. Cafés along the beach rent snorkel gear and serve meals.
