Alexandria and Siwa: Egypt's Mediterranean City and Its Desert Oasis

5 DAYS 6 places by WaTrips

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Citadel of Qaitbay, the catacombs and Pompey's Pillar, then Siwa's Shali Fortress, Oracle temple and salt lakes.

This trip pairs Alexander's city with the oasis he crossed the desert to reach. In Alexandria, see the modern Bibliotheca, the Citadel of Qaitbay on the site of the ancient lighthouse, the Greco-Roman catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa and Pompey's Pillar. Then drive west along the coast and into the desert to Siwa, a green oasis of palm groves. Watch sunset from the crumbling mud-brick Shali Fortress, visit the Temple of the Oracle where Alexander was told he was a god, and float in Siwa's salt lakes. October to April is best.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a major library and cultural centre opened in 2002, inspired by the ancient Library of Alexandria. Its tilted circular roof faces the sea, and its granite walls are carved with letters from many alphabets. Inside are a vast reading room, museums, a planetarium and galleries. It stands on the Corniche overlooking the Eastern Harbour.
