Middle and North Andaman in 2 Days: Baratang and Ross and Smith Islands

2 DAYS 3 places by WaTrips

Mount Harriet, the Baratang limestone caves, then Ross and Smith islands near Diglipur.

The road north from Port Blair leads to wilder islands. Day one climbs Mount Harriet for views over Port Blair, then drives north and takes a boat through the mangroves to the limestone caves of Baratang. Day two continues to Diglipur for Ross and Smith, twin islands joined by a sandbar. The road passes through a tribal reserve with strict rules: no stopping or photos. October to May is best.

Mount Harriet, renamed Mount Manipur, rises to about 365 metres across the bay from Port Blair and was the summer headquarters of the British chief commissioner. The surrounding national park protects evergreen forest rich in butterflies and birds. The view from the top toward North Bay is the scene printed on the old 20-rupee note.
