Aizawl and Reiek in 2 Days

Solomon's Temple and the State Museum in Aizawl, then Reiek Tlang and Hmuifang.

Aizawl spreads across steep ridges in the hills of Mizoram. Day one visits Solomon's Temple, a large church, and the Mizoram State Museum. Day two drives to Reiek Tlang and its traditional Mizo village, and to the forested viewpoint at Hmuifang. You need an Inner Line Permit; October to March is best.

Solomon's Temple Aizawl

Solomon's Temple at Chawlhhmun on the western side of Aizawl is a large white marble-clad church built by a Mizo religious group, Kohhran Thianghlim. Work began in 1997 and it was opened in 2017. Four tall towers stand at its corners, each topped with a crown, and landscaped gardens surround it. The main hall seats about two thousand.

Mizoram State Museum

The Mizoram State Museum in Aizawl was set up in 1977 and moved to its present building at McDonald Hill in the 1990s. Its galleries cover textiles, traditional dress, ornaments, weapons, household tools, musical instruments and natural history. Models and dioramas show Mizo village life and the chief's house.

Reiek Tlang

Reiek Tlang is a mountain about 30 km west of Aizawl, rising to around 1,550 metres. A path through forest leads to rocky cliffs at the top, with views over hills and valleys and, on clear days, the plains of Bangladesh. At the foot is a model Mizo village with traditional huts, where the Anthurium Festival is held.

Hmuifang

Hmuifang is a mountain of about 1,600 metres, some 50 km south of Aizawl on the road to Lunglei. Its top is covered with forest preserved since the time of the Mizo chiefs. A tourist resort stands in a grassy clearing, and the Thalfavang Kut festival is held here. Cliffs on one side give wide views across the hills.
