Kashmir's Shrines in 2 Days: Hazratbal, Jamia Masjid, Charar-e-Sharief and Kheer Bhawani

2 DAYS 6 places by WaTrips

Hazratbal, the Jamia Masjid, Khanqah-e-Moula and Shankaracharya in Srinagar, then Charar-e-Sharief and Kheer Bhawani.

Kashmir's faith traditions sit close together. Day one stays in Srinagar: Hazratbal shrine on the shore of Dal Lake, the Jamia Masjid with its 378 wooden pillars, the carved Khanqah-e-Moula on the Jhelum, and the Shankaracharya temple on the hill above the city. Day two visits Charar-e-Sharief, the shrine of the Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-din Wali, and the Kheer Bhawani temple set in a sacred spring at Tulmulla, which draws large crowds for its annual mela. Dress modestly and cover your head where asked. April to October is best.

The Jamia Masjid in Srinagar's old city was founded around 1400 by Sultan Sikandar and rebuilt several times after fires. Built in Indo-Saracenic style around a large garden courtyard, it is famous for the hundreds of tall deodar pillars that hold up its roof, each cut from a single trunk. The surrounding Nowhatta bazaars are among the liveliest in the old town.

The stone shrine on an octagonal plinth is among the oldest in Kashmir, and the philosopher Adi Shankara is said to have visited it. A road leads most of the way up, followed by some 240 steps.
