Cooch Behar Palace and the Madan Mohan temple, then the hike to Buxa Fort.

A short trip in North Bengal's Dooars. Day one visits the Cooch Behar Palace, modelled on Buckingham Palace, and the Madan Mohan temple. Day two hikes up to Buxa Fort inside the Buxa Tiger Reserve, once a British detention camp for freedom fighters. October to April is best; forest areas may close in the monsoon.

Cooch Behar Palace

Cooch Behar Palace, also called Victor Jubilee Palace, was built in 1887 for Maharaja Nripendra Narayan of the Koch dynasty. Modelled on the classical Italian Renaissance style, the long brick building has a projecting porch and a metal dome over the durbar hall. Part of it is now a museum of the royal family and the region's history. It is closed on Fridays.

Madan Mohan Temple Cooch Behar

The Madan Mohan Temple in the centre of Cooch Behar was built between 1885 and 1889 by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan. The white building with a central dome houses Madan Mohan, a form of Krishna, along with Kali, Tara and Bhavani. The Ras Mela held here each November is one of the oldest and largest fairs in North Bengal.

Buxa Fort

Buxa Fort stands at about 870 metres in the Buxa Tiger Reserve, near the Bhutan border. Built by the kings of Bhutan to guard the silk route, it was taken by the British and used as a high-security detention camp for freedom fighters. The ruins are reached by a forest trek of about five kilometres from Santalabari. A small memorial marks the site.
