Eastern Arunachal in 3 Days: Namsai, Parshuram Kund, Mayudia and Namdapha

India's far east is where the sun rises first. Day one visits the Golden Pagoda at Namsai and Parshuram Kund on the Lohit, which draws pilgrims at Makar Sankranti. Day two sees the Bhismaknagar fort ruins and drives up to Mayudia Pass, often snowy in winter. Day three is Namdapha National Park, one of the most biodiverse forests in the country. You need an Inner Line Permit; October to April is best.

Golden Pagoda Namsai

The Golden Pagoda, or Kongmu Kham, is a Burmese-style Buddhist temple at Tengapani near Namsai, completed in 2010. Its main gilded spire is surrounded by smaller ones and set in landscaped grounds. It belongs to the Theravada tradition of the Tai Khamti people, and the Kathina robe-offering festival is held here each autumn.

Parshuram Kund

Parshuram Kund is a Hindu pilgrimage site on the Lohit River in the lower reaches of the Lohit valley. Legend says the sage Parshuram washed away the sin of killing his mother by bathing here. Thousands of pilgrims take a dip on Makar Sankranti in mid-January. Steps lead down to the bathing place below a small temple.

Bhismaknagar Fort

Bhismaknagar is a ruined fortified city near Roing in Lower Dibang Valley, linked with the Chutia rulers who held this region from about the 12th to the 16th century. Burnt-brick walls, gateways and the plan of a central hall have been excavated on a rise above the plains. Local legend ties the place to King Bhishmaka, father of Rukmini.

Mayudia Pass

Mayodia Pass, at about 2,655 metres, lies on the road from Roing to Anini, about 56 km above Roing. It is one of the few places in Arunachal Pradesh with easy road access to snow in winter, usually from December to March. The viewpoint looks over forested ridges of the Mishmi Hills, and a small tourist lodge stands near the top.

Namdapha National Park

Namdapha National Park in Changlang district is one of the largest protected areas in India, rising from about 200 metres to over 4,500 metres. Its forest ranges from tropical rainforest to alpine meadow, and it is home to tigers, leopards, clouded leopards and snow leopards. The entry is at Miao, with forest camps at Deban on the Noa-Dihing river.
