Ziro Valley and the Apatani people, the Malinithan ruins, and Pasighat on the Siang.

Central Arunachal is home to some of India's most distinctive cultures. Day one is Ziro Valley, with the rice fields and villages of the Apatani people, also known for the Ziro Festival of Music each September. Day two visits the carved temple ruins at Malinithan. Day three reaches Pasighat on the Siang river, the oldest town in Arunachal. You need an Inner Line Permit; October to April is best.

Ziro Valley

Ziro Valley is a broad plateau of rice fields ringed by pine-covered hills in Lower Subansiri district, home of the Apatani people. They are known for a careful system of wet-rice farming combined with fish rearing, managed without machines. Bamboo villages such as Hong and Hari can be visited, and the Ziro music festival is held each autumn.

Malinithan

Malinithan is an archaeological site on a low hill at Likabali in the Siang foothills. Excavations found the stone plinth of a temple from about the 10th to 14th centuries, along with fine granite sculptures of Durga, Surya, Nandi and other deities. Legend links the place with Krishna and Rukmini. A modern temple and small museum stand at the site.

Pasighat

Pasighat, founded in 1911, is the oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh and the headquarters of East Siang district. It lies where the Siang, the main stream of the Brahmaputra, leaves the hills. The town is the home of the Adi people and a base for rafting and angling on the river, and for visiting Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary.
