Mawlynnong and Dawki in 2 Days

2 DAYS 5 places by WaTrips

Mawlynnong village and the Riwai root bridge, then boating at Dawki, Krang Suri Falls and the Nartiang monoliths.

Two days near the Bangladesh border. Day one visits Mawlynnong, often called Asia's cleanest village, and the Riwai living root bridge. Day two boats on the clear Umngot river at Dawki, swims at the blue pool of Krang Suri Falls and sees the standing stones at Nartiang. November to April is best; the river is clearest in winter.

Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong, in the East Khasi Hills near the Bangladesh border, became known after a travel magazine called it the cleanest village in Asia in 2003. Bamboo dustbins line its paved lanes, and villagers take turns sweeping them. There is a bamboo sky-view platform looking over the plains, a balancing rock, and homestays among flower gardens.

Riwai Living Root Bridge

The living root bridge at Riwai, near Mawlynnong, is the most easily reached of Meghalaya's root bridges. A short walk on stone steps leads down to a stream crossed by a broad span woven from the roots of a rubber fig tree by Khasi villagers. It is still used daily by local people, and a viewpoint sits a little further along the path.

Dawki Umngot River

The Umngot River at Dawki, on the border with Bangladesh, is famed for water so clear in winter that boats seem to float in the air above the pebbled bed. Country boats take visitors upstream beneath a suspension bridge built in 1932. The water is clearest from November to March; in the monsoon it runs brown and fast.

Krang Suri Falls

Krang Suri Falls lies near Amlarem in the West Jaintia Hills. A paved stone path leads down to a broad curtain of water that drops into a pool of striking blue-green colour. Visitors can walk behind the falls, swim with a life jacket, or take a small boat above. The colour is best in the dry months after the monsoon.

Nartiang Monoliths

Nartiang, in the West Jaintia Hills, has the largest collection of monoliths in Meghalaya. Hundreds of upright and flat stones, raised by Jaintia kings and clans between about the 16th and 19th centuries, stand under old trees. The tallest upright stone is around eight metres high. An old Durga temple of the Jaintia kings stands nearby.
