Kurukshetra and Panipat in 2 Days

2 DAYS 6 places by WaTrips

Brahma Sarovar, Jyotisar and Sheikh Chilli's tomb, Karna Lake, Babur's Kabuli Bagh and the tomb of Ibrahim Lodi.

Two places where Indian history was decided. Day one is Kurukshetra, the battlefield of the Mahabharata: the great tank of Brahma Sarovar, Jyotisar, where Krishna is said to have spoken the Bhagavad Gita, and the Mughal-era tomb of Sheikh Chilli. Day two stops at Karna Lake and reaches Panipat, site of three famous battles, for Babur's Kabuli Bagh mosque and the tomb of Ibrahim Lodi, who died there in 1526. Kurukshetra is crowded during solar eclipses and the Gita Jayanti festival; October to March is best.

Brahma Sarovar

Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra is one of the largest man-made bathing tanks in Asia, linked by tradition to Brahma, who is said to have created the universe from here. Pilgrims bathe on the occasion of a solar eclipse, when vast crowds gather. A Shiva temple stands in the water, reached by a bridge. Gita Jayanti in December is celebrated with lamps floated on the tank.

Jyotisar

Jyotisar, a few kilometres from Kurukshetra, is revered as the place where Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna before the Mahabharata war. A banyan tree believed to descend from the one that witnessed the sermon stands beside a marble chariot showing the scene. A sacred tank lies alongside, and a light-and-sound show is held in the evening.

Sheikh Chilli's Tomb at Thanesar is a fine Mughal monument of the 17th century, built for a Sufi saint said to have been the spiritual teacher of Prince Dara Shikoh. The octagonal tomb of pale sandstone, crowned by a white marble dome, stands on a high terrace beside a madrasa built around a courtyard. A small museum displays finds from nearby archaeological sites.

Karna Lake

Karna Lake, beside the Grand Trunk Road at Karnal, is named after Karna of the Mahabharata, who by legend bathed here and gave away his armour. The lake is a well-known highway halt between Delhi and Chandigarh, with a state tourism complex, boating and lawns. It makes a pleasant short stop rather than a destination in itself.

Kabuli Bagh Mosque

The Kabuli Bagh Mosque in Panipat was built by Babur in 1527 to mark his victory over Ibrahim Lodi at the First Battle of Panipat, and is named after his wife Kabuli Begum. It is the earliest Mughal monument in India. The brick mosque has a large central dome flanked by smaller ones; a gateway and a platform were added by Humayun.

Tomb of Ibrahim Lodi

The tomb of Ibrahim Lodi, the last Sultan of Delhi, stands in Panipat near where he fell in battle against Babur in 1526.
