Komodo and Flores: Dragons, Padar Island, Wae Rebo and Kelimutu

6 DAYS 5 places by WaTrips

Labuan Bajo, Padar Island and the Komodo dragons, manta rays, the cone houses of Wae Rebo and the coloured lakes of Kelimutu.

Flores is one of Indonesia's great adventures. From Labuan Bajo, sail into Komodo National Park: climb Padar Island for the famous three-bay view, meet Komodo dragons with a ranger, and snorkel with manta rays near the Pink Beach. Drive inland and hike up to Wae Rebo, a mountain village of cone-shaped houses where you can stay the night, then end with sunrise over Kelimutu's three crater lakes, each a different colour. April to November is the dry season; seas are calmest from April to June.

Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo is a fishing town on the western tip of Flores. It is the gateway to Komodo National Park, with a harbour full of traditional boats taking visitors on trips to the islands. The town's hills give fine views over the bay and its islands, especially at sunset. It has grown fast as a tourism centre since the 2010s.

Padar Island

Padar Island is the third largest island of Komodo National Park. A steep trail climbs to a viewpoint above the island, where three bays curve away on different sides, with beaches of white, black and pink sand. The view of the jagged hills and blue water at sunrise is one of the best known images of Indonesia. The island has no Komodo dragons today.

Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park lies between Sumbawa and Flores and includes the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar. It was created in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon, the largest living lizard, which can grow to three metres. Rangers lead walks to see the dragons. The surrounding seas are among the richest dive areas in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Kelimutu

Kelimutu is a volcano in central Flores, known for three crater lakes at its summit, each a different colour. The colours change over time from turquoise and green to red, brown or black, because of the minerals and gases in the water. Local people believe the lakes are resting places for souls. Visitors walk up before dawn to see the sunrise.
