Mecca Masjid, the Qutb Shahi tombs, Birla Mandir and the Statue of Equality, then Medak Cathedral.

Hyderabad has long been a city of many faiths. Day one starts at the Mecca Masjid beside Charminar, one of India's largest mosques, then the Qutb Shahi tombs and their mosque, and Birla Mandir on its hill for sunset. In between, visit the Statue of Equality, a seated statue of the saint Ramanujacharya surrounded by 108 shrines. Day two rides north to Medak Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Asia, built in the 1920s and known for its stained glass. October to February is best.

Mecca Masjid

One of the largest mosques in India, the Mecca Masjid near Charminar was begun in 1617 under Muhammad Qutb Shah and completed under the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1694. Bricks made from soil brought from Mecca are said to be set in its central arch. Its courtyard holds the tombs of several Nizams.

Qutb Shahi Tombs

The Qutb Shahi Tombs near Golconda hold the graves of the Qutb Shahi kings and their families, set in gardens. The domed mausoleums, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, rise on raised platforms decorated with stucco and once with glazed tiles. A long restoration has brought back the gardens and stepwells.

Statue of Equality

Inaugurated in 2022 at Muchintal, the Statue of Equality honours the 11th-century philosopher Ramanuja. The seated statue, about 66 metres tall with its base, rises above a hall about his life and teachings. It is surrounded by 108 small shrines representing the Divya Desams.

Medak Cathedral

Built between 1914 and 1924 under the British Methodist missionary Charles Walker Posnett, Medak Cathedral is one of the largest churches in Asia. Its Gothic Revival tower rises about 53 metres, and its stained-glass windows show scenes from the life of Christ. It draws large crowds at Christmas.
