Crete in 5 Days: Knossos, Spinalonga, Chania, Balos, the Samaria Gorge and Elafonisi

5 DAYS 6 places by WaTrips

The Minoan palace of Knossos, Spinalonga island, Chania's old harbour, Balos Lagoon, the Samaria Gorge and Elafonisi's pink sand.

Crete is Greece's largest island, with its own culture and food. See Knossos, the Minoan palace of the Minotaur legend, and the island fortress of Spinalonga, once a leper colony. Explore Chania's Venetian harbour and take a boat to the turquoise Balos Lagoon. Hike the 16-km Samaria Gorge down to the sea (open May to October), and end on Elafonisi's pink-tinted sand. May, June and September are best.
