Bastar in 2 Days: Chitrakote Falls and Danteshwari

Chitrakote and Tirathgarh falls, then the Danteshwari temple and Barsur.

Bastar is the tribal heartland of Chhattisgarh. Day one visits Chitrakote, India's widest waterfall, on the Indravati river, and the stepped Tirathgarh Falls. Day two goes to the Danteshwari temple in Dantewada and the old temples at Barsur. The Bastar Dussehra festival in autumn is unique. Check local travel advisories before visiting; October to February is best.

Chitrakote Falls

Chitrakote Falls on the Indravati River, about 38 km from Jagdalpur, is the widest waterfall in India, spreading to nearly 300 metres in the monsoon in a horseshoe that has earned it the name 'Niagara of India'. The drop is about 29 metres. In the dry season the flow thins to separate streams and boats take visitors close to the base.

Tirathgarh Falls

Tirathgarh Falls in Kanger Valley National Park, about 35 km from Jagdalpur, tumbles about 90 metres down a broad staircase of rock in many white streams. Steps lead to the bottom, where a small temple stands on a rock facing the fall. It is at its best from October to February.

Danteshwari Temple

Danteshwari Temple at Dantewada is one of the Shakti Peethas, said to mark where a tooth of Sati fell. Built in the 14th century by the Chalukya kings of Bastar at the confluence of the Shankini and Dankini rivers, it enshrines a black stone image of the goddess, the presiding deity of Bastar. She is central to the famous 75-day Bastar Dussehra.

Barsur Temples

Barsur, on the Indravati River, was a capital of the Nagvanshi rulers and is said to have once had 147 temples and as many ponds. Survivors from the 10th and 11th centuries include the Mama-Bhanja temple, the pillared Battisa temple, the Chandraditya temple and two enormous sandstone images of Ganesha, among the largest in India.
