Everest Region in 6 Days: Lukla to Namche Bazaar and Tengboche Monastery

6 DAYS 2 places by WaTrips

The flight to Lukla, the trail up the Dudh Kosi to Namche Bazaar, a rest day with Everest views and Tengboche Monastery below Ama Dablam.

You don't need weeks to see Everest. This short trek flies to Lukla and follows the Dudh Kosi river over suspension bridges to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital. Take a rest day there to get used to the altitude and walk up for your first view of Everest, then continue to Tengboche Monastery, facing the beautiful peak of Ama Dablam, before returning to Lukla. Go with a licensed guide, carry trekking permits, and walk slowly. October–November and March–May are the seasons; flights to Lukla are often delayed by weather.

Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar is the main town of the Khumbu region and a key stop on the way to Everest Base Camp. Its houses and lodges are built in terraces on a horseshoe-shaped slope. Trekkers rest here for a day to acclimatise, visit the Sherpa Culture Museum and climb to viewpoints with Everest in sight. A Saturday market brings traders from the surrounding villages.

Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche Monastery is the largest monastery in the Khumbu region, set on a ridge on the Everest Base Camp trek. Founded in 1916 and rebuilt after a fire in 1989, it faces Ama Dablam, Everest and Lhotse. Trekkers can attend prayers with the monks. In autumn the monastery hosts the colourful Mani Rimdu festival with masked dances.
