The Algarve and Alentejo: Évora, Benagil Cave, Ponta da Piedade and Cape St. Vincent

4 DAYS 5 places by WaTrips

Évora's Roman temple, Benagil Cave and Praia da Marinha, Ponta da Piedade and Cape St. Vincent.

Southern Portugal is golden cliffs and quiet plains. Start in Évora, a walled town in the Alentejo with a Roman temple and a chapel of bones. Then head to the Algarve: take a kayak or boat into the domed Benagil Cave, walk the cliffs above Praia da Marinha, see the rock arches and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade, and watch the sunset at Cape St. Vincent, once thought to be the end of the world. April to October is best.

Évora Roman Temple

The Roman Temple of Évora was built in the 1st century AD in the main square of the Roman town. Its granite base and Corinthian columns with marble capitals still stand. It was later used as a fortress and a slaughterhouse, which helped it survive. The historic centre of Évora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
