The glass tower soars over Lower Manhattan, its facets catching the sky. At its foot, water falls endlessly into two vast square pools where the Twin Towers once stood.
The tower
One World Trade Center, also called the Freedom Tower, is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex, designed by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It is the tallest building in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. Its spire was completed on 10 May 2013, bringing it to 1,776 feet (541 m), a height that refers to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The building opened on 3 November 2014, and the One World Observatory on 29 May 2015.
Observatory and memorial
SkyPod elevators reach the 102nd floor in 47 seconds, and the observatory spans floors 100 to 102. General admission costs roughly $30 to $48 depending on the time. Just south lies the National September 11 Memorial & Museum: a field of swamp white oaks around two recessed pools in the footprints of the Twin Towers, with the names of the victims inscribed around the waterfalls. The memorial opened to the public on 12 September 2011.
