The museum
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Met, was founded in 1870. By floor area it is the fourth-largest museum in the world and the largest art museum in the Americas, and with 5,727,258 visitors in fiscal year 2025 it was the most visited museum in the United States. The Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park holds its medieval European collection.

The Temple of Dendur, commissioned around 23 BCE under Emperor Augustus in Nubia, was given by Egypt to the United States in 1965 and has been shown at the Met since 1978.
