A clock tower marks the heart of town, and in the evening families fill the square. Nearby, the large Nur Mosque is lit up at night.
The city
Kırıkkale lies 80 km east of Ankara, on the Ankara–Kayseri railway near the Kızılırmak River. Its name means 'broken castle'. Formerly a village, it grew fast after steel mills were set up in the 1950s; chemical plants followed in the 1960s, and the Tüpraş oil refinery in 1986. It became the seat of its own province in 1989.
In the centre
The central square, with its clock tower, is the centre of city life, and the large Nur Mosque stands nearby. The Kızılırmak, the 'Red River', irrigates rice fields around the city.
