The minaret stands on its own in the courtyard, rebuilt stone by stone after the great earthquake. Inside, the old wooden roof shelters the prayer hall once more.
History
The Maraş Grand Mosque, Ulu Camii, stands south of Kahramanmaraş Castle and northwest of the covered market. It was built by Suleiman of the Dulkadirids, who reigned from 1442 to 1454, and renewed in 1501–1502 by his son Bozkurt. It has a wooden roof, and unlike most mosques its minaret stands separately in the courtyard, decorated with ceramic plates.
After the earthquake
The earthquakes of 6 February 2023 heavily damaged the mosque, and part of the minaret collapsed. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism restored it in its original form, dismantling, numbering and rebuilding the minaret stones. It reopened for worship in March 2026, 1,135 days after its last prayer.
