Water spills from a travertine ledge in dozens of white threads. In midwinter the whole fall freezes, hanging in great curtains of ice.
The falls
Girlevik (Gürlevik) Waterfall is in Kalecik village, Çağlayan, about 29 km southeast of Erzincan. Its water comes from nine springs at the foot of the Munzur Mountains and falls about 40 metres from a travertine platform in an irregular way. Between 1950 and 1953 the State Hydraulic Works built a small hydroelectric plant at its foot.
Summer and winter
In summer the spray makes it a cool escape from the heat, with picnic areas nearby. When temperatures drop below zero, the waterfall freezes, and its thick icicles are used for ice climbing.
