5 DAYS 7 places by WaTrips

Lucerne's Chapel Bridge and Lion Monument, Mount Rigi, Titlis and Pilatus, the Aescher cliff restaurant and Basel Minster.

Central Switzerland is lakes and mountains you can reach by boat and cog railway. Start in Lucerne at the Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument, then ride up Mount Rigi, the 'Queen of the Mountains'. Stand on the glacier of Titlis and ride the steep railway up Pilatus. Head east to Appenzell to hike to the Aescher restaurant built into a cliff, and end in Basel, with its red sandstone Minster above the Rhine. May to October is best.

Chapel Bridge

The Chapel Bridge in Lucerne is a covered wooden footbridge built in the 14th century across the Reuss River. It is the oldest covered bridge in Europe. Its roof beams hold painted panels from the 17th century showing local history. The octagonal Water Tower stands beside it. Much of the bridge was rebuilt after a fire in 1993.
