Maharashtra's Temple Trail in 4 Days: Three Jyotirlingas, Tuljapur and Pandharpur

Ramkund and Trimbakeshwar, Shani Shingnapur, Grishneshwar, Aundha Nagnath, Tulja Bhavani and Pandharpur's Vitthal temple.

This long route links three of Maharashtra's five Jyotirlingas with its best-loved temples. Day one is Nashik: Ramkund at Panchavati and Trimbakeshwar at the source of the Godavari. Day two visits Shani Shingnapur and Grishneshwar near Ellora. Day three is a long ride to Aundha Nagnath. Day four ends with Tulja Bhavani at Tuljapur and the Vitthal Rukmini temple at Pandharpur, where the warkari pilgrims arrive on foot for Ashadhi Ekadashi. Expect long riding days; October to February is best.

Ramkund Panchavati

On the Godavari in the Panchavati area of Nashik, Ramkund is the sacred tank where Rama is believed to have bathed during his exile. Pilgrims come to bathe and to immerse the ashes of the dead, and it is the centre of the Kumbh Mela held in Nashik every twelve years.

Trimbakeshwar Temple

Near the source of the Godavari, Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva. The present black stone temple was built by the Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the 18th century, and its linga has three faces representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Tulja Bhavani Temple

The temple of Tulja Bhavani at Tuljapur is one of the most important goddess shrines in Maharashtra and the family deity of the Bhosale rulers. Legend says the goddess gave Shivaji his sword. The Navaratri festival draws huge crowds.
