Lakshadweep in 3 Days: Agatti, Bangaram and Kavaratti

3 DAYS 3 places by WaTrips

Lagoon days on India's coral islands: Agatti's beach, snorkelling at Bangaram, and Kavaratti, the islands' capital. Entry permit required.

Lakshadweep is a scatter of coral islands in the Arabian Sea, with clear lagoons, white sand and very little else, which is the point. Visiting needs an entry permit, so plan through a tour operator before you book anything. Flights from Kochi land on Agatti, where the first day is spent on the lagoon beach by the airstrip. Day two is a boat ride to Bangaram, an uninhabited-feeling island known for snorkelling over the reef and a quiet beach all round. The last day moves on to Kavaratti, the capital, with its calm lagoon and water sports. Boats between islands run to a schedule, so confirm timings a day ahead. October to May is the best time; the monsoon brings rough seas.

Agatti Lagoon Beach

Agatti is the gateway to Lakshadweep, home to the islands' only airstrip, and its lagoon beach looks out over shallow turquoise water sheltered by the coral reef. The lagoon is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides over the coral, and the island's quiet villages sit among coconut palms. Visitors need an entry permit from the Lakshadweep administration.

Bangaram Island

A small teardrop-shaped island ringed by white sand and a vast lagoon, Bangaram has no permanent villages, only a beach resort, and is one of the few islands in Lakshadweep open to foreign as well as Indian visitors. It is known for snorkelling and diving over the reef, with sea turtles and colourful reef fish, and lies a short boat ride from Agatti.
