Hills & Forts around Bengaluru: Nandi Hills, Kolar and Ramanagara in 3 Days

3 DAYS 9 places by WaTrips

Easy rides from Bengaluru: Kolar's temples, sunrise at Nandi Hills, Devanahalli Fort, Ghati Subramanya, Shivagange and Ramanagara's rocks.

You don't have to go far from Bengaluru for a good trip. Day one is Kolar: the ancient Kolaramma Temple and Kotilingeshwara, with its huge linga and thousands of smaller ones. On day two, be at Nandi Hills for sunrise above the clouds (gates open early and it gets crowded on weekends), see the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple at its foot, then visit Devanahalli Fort, where Tipu Sultan was born, and the Ghati Subramanya Temple. On the last day climb Shivagange's steep rock steps, walk in the forest at Devarayanadurga, and finish among the giant boulders of Ramadevara Betta in Ramanagara, where the film Sholay was shot. Each day is a short ride, so you can also split it into weekends.

Nandi Hills

Nandi Hills rises about 1,470 metres above the plains some 60 km north of Bengaluru, and it is the classic sunrise trip from the city. On winter mornings a sea of cloud fills the valleys below the viewpoints at Tipu's Drop and Amrutha Sarovara. Tipu Sultan used the hill as a summer retreat and built a small fort and palace here, and the Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple at the base dates back more than a thousand years to the Ganga dynasty. The hill is the source of several rivers including the Arkavathi. Go very early on weekdays, as the narrow road and the car park fill fast at weekends.
